Positive Plate Award
The Positive Plate Award goes to The Mediterranean
Grill for its fresh vegetable salads, roasted
vegetables, and use of olive oil. The healthy
Mediterranean diet builds on both veggies and olive
oil. The Mediterranean Grill relies on olive oil, a rich
source of monounsaturated fat which helps to lower
cholesterol.
Their wholesome, fresh ingredients have made the
restaurant a success - nearly everything they serve is
prepared fresh daily. Mustafa Sawli and his uncle own
the family restaurant.
Consumers can find up-to-date nutrition information
on the American Dietetic Association
website. Because 48% of Americans' food
dollars go to away-from-home eating, the Wichita
Dietetic Association will highlight other Wichita
restaurants that make healthy eating easy-and
delicious.
For more information on the Positive Plate
Award visit their website.

February is American Heart Month
Heart Disease is the Number One Cause of Death
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the
United States and is a major cause of disability. The
most common heart disease in the United States is
coronary heart disease, which often appears as a
heart attack. In 2008, an estimated 770,000
Americans will have a new coronary attack, and about
430,000 will have a recurrent attack. About every 26
seconds, an American will have a coronary event, and
about one every minute will die from one.
The chance of developing coronary heart disease can
be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control
factors that put people at greater risk. Additionally,
knowing the signs and symptoms of heart attack are
crucial to the most positive outcomes after having a
heart attack. People who have survived a heart attack
can also work to reduce their risk of another heart
attack or a stroke in the future. For more information
on heart disease and stroke, visit CDC's Division for Heart
Disease and Stroke Prevention.

Tackle Super Bowl Healthy Eating
Super Bowl Sunday is coming up, a day of food and
festivity. Before the crowd arrives, take steps to set a
super table.
Warm up with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein
and lower fat desserts. Line up the appetizers with
vegetable kabobs, fat-free yogurt dips, fruit and
cheese or tortilla roll-ups.
For the main course, set your line up with lean protein
choices like three bean chili, deli turkey and ham
sandwiches, layered with lettuce, tomato and
cucumber slices. A pot of vegetable soup comes off
the bench with an easy way to score nutritional points.
Dessert choices to wrap up a winning day include
brownies made with cocoa, trifle made with frozen
fruit, non-fat yogurt and angel food cake. Whatever
your game plan, score extra points by making sure the
beverages on your play list include a mix of alcoholic
and nonalcoholic choices.
