Local Community Gardens
Tour with IGO on Thursday, August 2nd

In our community, there are eleven community gardens and 3 new ones already being planned. There are an estimated 10,000 community gardens within U.S. cities. Residents share in both the maintenance and rewards of the garden. The simple act of planting a garden can create positive environmental, economic, and social impacts on a neighborhood. But the impact of a community garden can reach much further as they support sustainable agriculture, urban revitalization, reducing hunger, cultural understanding and even crime reduction.

Infinite Growth Opportunities (IGO) is sponsoring a community garden tour beginning at 5:30, August 2nd. Call Susan at 204-3985 for more information.

Health Tip

Grilling Fruits and Vegetables
Add variety to your barbecuing this summer with grilled fruits and vegetables. Cooking vegetables right on the grill adds flavor to any meal. Baste firm vegetables like peppers, corn, eggplant or onions. Season them with herbs and place on a hot grill until they are tender and brown - usually about 10 to 15 minutes. Place sliced zucchini, tomatoes and carrots on heavy- duty foil and sprinkle with a little water and seasoning. Wrap the foil and grill six to eight minutes or until vegetables are tender. Make kabobs out of pineapples, peaches and bananas and grill on low heat until the fruit is hot and slightly golden. Another great reason to add fruits and vegetables to your outdoor cooking repertoire: With the abundance of produce available this time of year, it's easy to consume your recommended five 1.5-to-2-cup servings of fruits and vegetables a day for optimal health.
