Healthy School Checklist
Is Your School a Healthy and Active School?

Does your school help every student attain the skills, knowledge and attitude necessary for them to lead healthy, active, productive lives that lead to academic success? This checklist provides parents and community members a tool to answer that question.

The more "yes" answers the better a school is working toward promoting healthy and active habits for the students. If your school is doing well, take time to congratulate the principal and staff and encourage them to continue their positive efforts to promote the importance of being healthy and active.

If your school is in need of improvement, below are some suggestions for steps you can take. Visit Action For Healthy Kids website to learn more.

  • Visit with the school administrator about how you can help.
  • Attend a site council meeting to share ideas.
  • Obtain a copy of your district's health and wellness policy.
  • Talk to other parents and develop a plan for actions that families can implement.
  • Work with classroom teachers to create a list of healthy snacks for parties and rewards.
  • Help organize a "walk or bike" to school group.
  • "Our schools have a responsibility to educate both minds and bodies. That should be our challenge for the future." Dr. David Satcher, Former U.S. Surgeon General.

Children's Health Is a Family Affair

What is the most powerful and effective incentive for children to eat healthfully and get the physical activity the need? Look in the mirror! A recent survey of parents and children by the American Dietetic Association Foundation showed that parents are kids' top role model when it comes to nutrition and healthy eating. Help your children learn to make healthy choices and get moving:
  • Plan regular family activities that are physically active
  • Start a walking club
  • Take your family to the park to to inline skate while you walk
  • Make walking the dog a fun job instead of a chore
Let your children help plan menus, go to the store with you and prepare and serve meals. For more information about healthing eating visit the American Dietetic Association website.
