At the Greater Wichita YMCA, strengthening our community means more than offering programs, it means creating opportunities for healthier lives.  Healthy living is at the heart of everything we do, encouraging regular physical activity and promoting nutritious food habits is in perfect alignment with the Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita.

We know that movement is powerful. It improves physical health, boosts mental well-being, and enhances overall quality of life. But for some, staying active isn’t always easy. Certain health conditions can make exercise more challenging, yet even more essential. That’s why the YMCA has specialized programs designed to meet people where they are, particularly those facing a cancer diagnosis or living with Parkinson’s Disease. These programs provide not only expert guidance, but also a safe, supportive environment where participants can regain strength, confidence, and connection. Thanks to the generosity of our annual Strong Community Campaign, these life-changing programs remain accessible to those who need them most.

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological condition that affects movement, often causing tremors, stiffness, slowed motion, and balance challenges. While there is no cure, research shows that regular exercise can significantly improve both motor and non-motor symptoms. The YMCA’s Parkinson’s Support Program is designed to help participants maintain independence and delay physical decline through targeted, structured exercise. Classes focus on building strength, maintaining balance, enhancing posture, and increasing endurance. Instructors also incorporate cognitive challenges alongside movement, helping address the broader impacts of the disease.

Equally important is the sense of community these classes foster. Participants connect with others who share similar experiences, creating a space of understanding, encouragement, and belonging.

Cancer diagnoses are becoming more common nationwide, but there is hope. Advances in early detection and treatment mean more people are surviving—and living beyond cancer. However, the journey doesn’t end when treatment does. Without intentional action, survivors may face lasting physical and emotional challenges that impact their quality of life.

That’s where LIVESTRONG at the YMCA makes a difference. This 12-week exercise program is designed to help cancer survivors rebuild their strength, restore their energy, and reconnect with their well-being. Participants work on improving cardiovascular endurance, increasing muscular strength, and enhancing flexibility, balance, and range of motion. Just as important, they find encouragement and understanding within a community of peers who truly “get it”.

The structure of the program helps participants establish a healthy routine, while also equipping them with the tools and confidence to stay active long after the program ends.
