The Health & Wellness Coalition of Wichita is proud to highlight our longtime partner, Wichita Park & Recreation. Together we work to open doors to physical activity and community connection across neighborhoods. From free activity offerings at recreation centers to citywide events that bring people outside, the Park & Recreation Department is a critical system partner in helping Wichita live well.

Wichita’s park system is one of the city’s strongest assets for health and quality of life. According to the 2024 Impact Report, 51% of residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park, and Park & Recreation maintains over 140 parks and 5,000 acres of green space across the city. These spaces aren’t just beautiful — they’re essential for improving physical and mental well-being, building community, and creating equitable access to recreation opportunities for all residents.

A recent example of how the Coalition and Park & Recreation worked together with Walktober. Did you know that you can walk for free at six recreation centers? When the weather keeps you from wanting to walk outside but you still want to get those steps in, head over to a recreation center and walk indoors. There is no fee to come walk at any of the recreation centers! Orchard M-F: 8 am to 9 am, 11 am to 1 pm. Edgemoor MWF: 1 to 4 pm & W 9 am to 12 pm, Evergreen M-F noon to 3 pm, Linwood M 11 am to 4 pm TTh 11:30 am to 4 pm WF 9 am to 4 pm,  Woodard M-Th 1:30 to 4 pm & Brewer – coming soon! The community benefits from Park & Recreation hosting Open Streets ICT! This is a celebration of community, connection, and healthy living. Family-friendly and free, this initiative brings Wichitans of all ages and fitness levels to gather to promote active lifestyles, foster social engagement, and create vibrant public spaces. By closing the streets to vehicles, we transform urban spaces into open areas where residents can bike, walk, run, skate, and play freely. These events not only inspire movement but also build stronger, more connected communities by inviting local businesses, vendors, and performers to join in the fun. Whether you’re exploring a new part of the city or reconnecting with your neighbors, Open Streets ICT offers a welcoming experience for everyone. The 2026 events have already been announced here

The Health & Wellness Coalition appreciates the support from the Park & Recreation Department including a park spotlight tour May-September of 2023 that introduced Coalition members to five different facilities. “We value working with the Health & Wellness Coalition because collaboration lets us reach more people and leverage partner resources to make healthy choices easier across Wichita.” — Angela Buckner, Recreation Superintendent, City of Wichita Park & Recreation
